About Laoshi Derek
Laoshi Derek and his wife Jackie are the privileged parents of 7 amazing kids (two now grown and married), and their family life is as busy as it sounds. Derek has been training with Kung-fu for Christ since 2016 and has earned his green belt. His favorite part of teaching is one-on-one: helping students overcome challenges they're experiencing and seeing their confidence grow with each new success.
By day, Derek works for the Canadian Home Builders' Association helping governments improve building codes, simplify complex laws, and reduce the cost of housing. Derek specializes in designing and building communities that make all their own energy, like www.west5.ca and www.evepark.ca.
Derek cherishes the history behind the words "Kong-fu", referring to mastery by hard work, applicable to all areas of life, not just martial arts. Kung-Fu For Christ has been a home for Derek and his family where they have learned and practiced skills for their bodies, minds, and spirits, training their whole person. Derek loves the way this program integrates all areas of life and provides a safe space where hard work is rewarded, where kids grow into leadership roles and learn to help others, and where students are taught to thrive as people, not just as martial artists.
