Discover how a small group of volunteers transformed a shared passion for martial arts and faith into a thriving not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving the community.
Kung-Fu For Christ Canada began in 2013 with a simple but powerful vision: to use kung-fu as a way to enrich lives, build meaningful relationships, and share the love of Christ with the community. What started as a small group of passionate volunteers offering martial arts classes without required fees has grown into a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving children, youth, adults, seniors, and families throughout Waterloo Region.
From the beginning, Kung-Fu for Christ aimed to offer more than physical training. Martial arts has served as a foundation for developing confidence, discipline, respect, perseverance, and servant leadership while creating opportunities for faith development, mentorship, and lasting community connections.
Today, Kung-Fu For Christ continues to expand its impact through martial arts programming without required fees. Kung-Fu for Christ also serves the broader community through fitness programs, educational workshops such as self-defence courses, leadership initiatives, community outreach, and inter-organizational partnerships that support people of all ages to grow in body, mind, and spirit.
Who We Are Today
Growing our mission. Strengthening our community.
What began as a small group of dedicated volunteers has grown into a thriving not-for-profit organization serving individuals and families throughout Waterloo Region. Today, our passionate team of youth and adult volunteers continues to advance our mission by providing martial arts, fitness, leadership, and faith-based programs that inspire confidence, develop character, strengthen faith, and create meaningful relationships and community connections.
As our organization has grown, so has our impact. We have expanded our programs to include women and girl’s self-defence workshops, PD Day camps, and even more speaking engagements, seminars, and community outreach initiatives.
Our Approach
Addressing The Demand For An Innovative Approach To Mental And Physical Health
Canadians’ health has declined, with issues like mental illness, poor physical health, and social isolation worsening. Many cannot access affordable solutions. Worse, available services often respond to these crises in isolation although they are interconnected, and don’t focus community health. Kung-Fu for Christ is so much more than just a martial arts club. Students train in kung-fu, earn belts through demonstrating their skills in a grading and are invited to participate in tournaments. Even more importantly, they advance their physical health, develop friendships, and learn and practice values like discipline, respect, and perseverance.
Kung-Fu for Christ’s innovative program has five components:
Fitness, Faith, Leadership, Relationships, and Community Work
Our Five Pillars
Fitness
Our students are trained in Shaolin kung-fu. In addition to many physical health benefits, kung-fu provides allows students to learn valuable life skills such as increased concentration, peace, patience, self-control, self-confidence, and more!
Faith Development
We encourage faith development in a welcoming environment. We provide age-appropriate Bibles to interested students. Students can earn chevrons for their uniforms as they begin reading their Bible. Classes end with a faith lesson linking kung-fu and biblical values applicable to students’ everyday lives. After the children’s class, kids can gather with youth leaders to read Scripture, have a snack, play games, socialize, and build community.
Leadership
We cultivate values-driven youth and adult Christian leaders who provide leadership in the program and their local communities. Aspiring leaders are equipped through structured leadership curriculum, intentional mentorship, and practical leadership experience.
Relationships
We weave relationship-building activities into all aspects of programming to foster friendships and meaningful social connections among students, leaders, and families. In our program, we have created a welcoming family of people from diverse backgrounds.
Community Service
We believe in serving our community. As a team, we bring real change to Waterloo Region through hands-on activities like organizing and supporting backpack and food drives.
