About Laoshi Morgan
Laoshi Morgan has been training in kung-fu since approximately 2011 and has also received training in kickboxing. She has been teaching kung-fu since 2013 and particularly enjoys working with novice ranks just starting their kung-fu journey. Additionally, she believes that martial arts provide a unique space for building friendships and community, so she loves building connections among students and families that extend beyond kung-fu.
One of Laoshi Morgan’s favourite Bible verses to teach and live by is Matthew 7:12: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” Although simple sounding, Laoshi Morgan believes this verse is incredibly complex and in some cases, difficult to enact, yet essential for every area of life. This verse encourages her to do things like love her neighbour, regularly volunteer, serve her community, teach and mentor others.
In the warmer months, Laoshi Morgan loves spending time outside in her garden with her husband and daughter. She has her MSW and PhD in social work. As such, she is knowledgeable about mental health and social services. She is a social work educator (tenured Associate Professor of social work at Redeemer University) and social work researcher. She contributes to research and education on the value of sport and faith for mental health and community work. She is also a certified First Aid and CPR instructor and has completed several courses through the Coaching Association of Canada including courses on Supporting Individuals on the Autism Spectrum in Sports, Mental Health in Sport, Diversity and Inclusion in Action, Anti-Racism in Coaching and Intercultural Skills in Sport.
