About Sifu Alan
Sifu Alan is a second-degree black sash in Shaolin Kung-Fu and has been training in martial arts since 1988. He has also had training in Shotokan Karate, Kickboxing, Aikido and several grappling styles. Sifu Alan has been teaching since 1993 and loves to spend time refining student’s techniques, especially kicks. However, he believes that the greatest thing that martial arts teaches are life skills, so he loves to see his students applying skills learned in kung-fu like perseverance and confidence to their daily lives.
Sifu Alan is inspired to teach by Romans 10:14: “But before people can pray to the Lord for help, they must believe in Him. And before they can believe in the Lord, they must hear about Him. And for anyone to hear about the Lord, someone must tell them.” This verse encourages him to use martial arts as an avenue to share his faith and let people know about the love that God has for them and the sacrifice that Jesus made for them. This verse also encourages him to equip others as Godly leaders, preparing them to share their faith with others.
Outside of Kung-fu for Christ, Sifu Alan loves playing board games with his wife, and playing in the park with his daughter. He is a certified First Aid and CPR instructor and has completed several courses through the Coaching Association of Canada, including courses on Supporting Individuals on the Autism Spectrum in Sports, Mental Health in Sport, Diversity and Inclusion in Action, Anti-Racism in Coaching and Intercultural Skills in Sport. Sifu Alan believes that martial arts should be for everyone, and these courses help ensure that he is equipped to support his students, no matter where they are at.
